Laywoman Asks "How can the LCMS NOT be there?" |
I completely support Dr. Benke for his participation in the prayer service
at Yankee Stadium.
As an LCMS Lutheran, I stayed awake watching the prayer service as it aired, which concluded at about 1:45 a.m. (if I remember correctly) California time. I was praying that an LCMS pastor would participate and offer a prayer to support all the LCMS members, their loved ones and friends that were affected by Sept. 11th. I almost lost hope as the various participants offered their prayers and the service was coming to an end...thinking "How can the LCMS NOT be there? What message will it send to all of us AND those affected by this tragedy? If the LCMS doesn't participate does it mean we think we're better than other religions? This community is in mourning and WE (the LCMS) better be there!" I was so very thankful when Dr. Benke stepped up to offer his prayer. It almost didn't matter to me what he prayed for...just that he was there in support of the hurting community and that he was representing all of us in the LCMS and most of all our Lord, Jesus Christ! As I watched the prayer service and heard the various prayers, I felt it was important for each denomination to be there to show support for the people of their religion. Dr. Benke represented us AND was a reflection of Christ's love. Yes, I believe Jesus would have done the same thing. Dr. Benke, I applaud you for the love and concern you showed by being at Yankee Stadium and the prayer you offered! I am appalled by the action taken against you! My prayers are with you!
