I was happy to read this morning that Wallace Schulz has been suspended. I am unhappy that he was suspended with pay. His salary should be withheld and donated to the victims of 9/11. Isn't this precisely the "charity" that he preaches on his radio show?

The more that I read concerning this case the more concerned I become. Where is the charity? Where is the tolerance? Where is the fellowship? If we cannot see these attributes in our leadership how can we ever hope for these traits to be paramount in our congregations? Do the pastors and congregations that brought such abstract charges actually feel they are doing good?

I saw Dr. Benke on television. I was proud that Lutherans were represented. I was even more impressed with his words and prayer. Am I missing something? Is this not the root and basis of our beliefs?

Too often the Lutheran Church especially among our youth, is perceived as puritanical, Germanic, and out of touch with the realities of day-to-day living. The action on the part of those bringing these abstract charges at a time when the reality of suffering and pain should be in the forefront merely reinforces that perception.

Throughout history, it is the unyielding, separatist, fundamentalist religious attitudes that have spawned the terrorists who kill and injure in the name of God. It is the inflexible, self-righteous views that created the killers who flew jetliners into our buildings and killed thousands of innocent people. Accordingly, we must be ever vigilant in our own Church and religious endeavors to insure that Jesus and His Mission are not overshadowed by more personal human objectives.

I pray that that the absurdity of this entire matter soon finds an end and Dr. Benke is promptly reinstated to his rightful position.

Sincerely,
Hans W. Kuenstler
