It is not surprising that Dr. Schulz was suspended by LLL. He was the heir apparent to be "Lutheran Hour" speaker when Dr. Hoffmann retired, but was passed over for the more glossy image presented by Dale Meyer. "Wally" was then and is now viewed as being too "orthodox" to be successful as an evangelist.

His action in the Benke case gave his opponents the ammunition they think they need to finally get rid of him.

Liberals (or for anyone who prefers the term, moderates) have no problem accusing conservatives of playing politics, while they themselves hate its greatest practitioners, as this action clearly indicates.

Dr. Schulz had a constitutional -- and Scriptural -- job to do, and with much prayer and study, he did it.

He made his reasoning clear.

For LLL to inject itself into Synodical problems is the real enemy of the Gospel. Why do THEY not stick to their task? I think they are a little like Israel of old, which did not like to do things God's way, so they finally found a way to silence the true prophets so that they could

continue to hear what they wanted to hear -- to their own destruction.

By the way, Dr. Schulz's suspension does not compare to Dr. Benke's. Dr. Benke fully understood that several other District Presidents had been disciplined for ecumenical activity, and he chose to ignore the precedent. Dr. Schulz was doing what he was required to do by the Synod.

For too long, certain leaders of Synod have been saying that what the members of Synod think does not matter to them, they will do what they want to do. The body needs ALL of its members, but when part of the body is sick or injured, the problem needs to be treated. And for any leader

to say that they will find a way around clear actions and resolutions of Synod in convention is a sickness.

LLL's action is another symptom of disease. They knew Dr. Schulz is an officer of Synod. To suspend him because he is trying to do his duty in that position as well as Lutheran Hour speaker is at best duplicitous, and at worst, dirty politics.

Sincerely, Rev. Franklin H. Giebel
