I read with some sadness Pastor Matzat's account of Pres. Kieschnick's appearance at St. Peter, Brooklyn, July 11. It occurs to me that there must have been quite a little bit of 'phone callin' and press releasin' goin' on.

"Police barricades...Five TV trucks...all the networks plus...etc." It must have been amazing. However, large staged events with lots of media coverage, crowd chants, angry words, and assurances that "he (Benke) wouldn't back down" and "Something has to give--and it won't be David Benke" do nothing to foster any kind of resolution to this issue. Nor do they make one's position correct. Having Rep. Gary Ackerman give a "sermon-like" presentation comparing those who disagree with Pres. Kieschnick and Pres. Benke with Nazis?! The level of acrimony has reached unwarranted heights. Not only so but in Pastor Matzat's letter our LCMS Pres. is made to look like a partisan rather than the leader of the whole Synod. Talk about your "once in a lifetime events", this one takes the cake. It may very well be that the elderly lady quoted at the end of Pastor Matzat's letter was "ashamed" of the LCMS because such an event as July 11 was allowed to take place, at least I hope so. As for me and my congregation we pray for all the leaders and pastors of the LCMS that they may remain faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ and His Word of Truth and that wisdom and God's will may prevail always.
